Fascinating!
I musts first state, write and say that I had no prior knowledge that this book in question, i.e., The Heptameron (Penguin Classics)by Marguerite De Navarre, P.A. Chilton(Translator), that it even existed. However, I must say that I have been very pleasantly surprised. The story surrounds a plethora of storytellers; whom one by one tell stories of adventure, heartache et al; and are very easy to relate to (even though they were written almost 500 years ago and by doing so shows the authors brilliance since most books are only read by the most current audience). The translation is very well done and therefore the book is indeed a pleasure to read (since my knowledge of French is nonexistent at this time).

70-odd stories fashioned after Boccaccio's Decameron
Anyone interested in gender studies, especially wishing to understand the sexual relationships between spouses and lovers, the perceptions of what is acceptable, what is "masculine" or "feminine," would not only enjoy the reading, but gain some insight on Renaissance French culture. Along with the Decameron, Faerie Queene, Shakespeare's plays, and Orlando Furioso, this text is a necessary one for understanding the society at court during the Renaissance in Europe.

The Navarre Bible: Gospels & Acts

Simply Outstanding!!!
The Navarre Bible: Gospels and Acts is a truly wonderful piece of work. Much of the Navarre project was inspired by St. Jose Escriva. Consequently, the reader can expect that much of the commentary is laden with this saint's thoughts on Holy Scripture.

The text of the translation is the Revised Standard Edition. It is quite readable and, from what I can discern, a faithful rendering of Holy Writ.

The true value in this compendium is that its reflections on scripture are more of a more spiritual nature than one might expect from a Bible commentary. The commentary draws you in to the love of God. It is far from academic, although it has great value for this purpose as well. The saints are quoted quite liberally as well as the documents of Vatican II and papal encyclicals. To that end, the Navarre commentary is a great spring-board for further research and reflection.

Accompanying the text (to the left) are cross-references that will be helpful particularly in the study of the synoptic Gospels. I read this volume through one chapter at a time as a meditation for each day. As noted above, the commentary lends itself to this method of reading.

In all, the Navarre Bible: Gospels and Acts is outstanding. I recommend it for all readers.

Absolutely Outstanding!
Scepter has done a great service by binding the 4 Gospels and the book of Acts into one very nicely laid out, quality, hardcover volume. The only thing missing from this, as opposed to the individual paperback editions, is the text of the Latin Vulgate. Most people (like myself) won't find that to be a problem, and what's left is the text of the RSV Catholic Edition (not to be confused with the inclusive language NRSV) and the full commentary from the paperback editions.

This is the first Bible commentary that I have been absolutely unable to put down. For starters, this commentary, as far as I can tell, is absolutely faithful to the Magisterium, and the explations truly reflect the interpretation of Scripture in light of 2,000 years of Biblical scholarship. Within the commentary, one often finds quotes from Saints, Fathers, and Church documents which address the passage, something that I find indispensible and immeasureably interesting.

The work is also extremely well cross-referenced, and provides an excellent opportunity for in-depth study. This is a work intended for those truly interested in deepening their understanding of Scripture in light of the Orthodox Catholic teaching.

All in all, this is the best commentary on the Gospels and Acts that I've seen. I only wish that Scepter would release the rest of the NT in hardcover format...

Helmet of Navarre

Henri IV in easy to read form
My interest in Henri IV stems from stopping in the small town of Marvejols (in the vicinity of the hunting ground of the beast of Gevaudan) en route from England to Narbonne in the South of France. The northern fortified gate of Marvejols sports a rather strange and unflattering statue of Henri IV, which was apparently created in the 1950s by the local sculptor Emmanuel Auriscote.
Finding information about Henri IV in the English language is not that easy. It is often confusing because there were a lot of Henries around at the time. In fact there was the war of the three Henries, one of which was Henri IV. Many historical authors forget to tell you which Henri is doing what to which other Henri. Statements such as "It then transpired that Henri had plotted the downfall of Henri" are not very enlightening.
Luckily Burke Wilkinson has aimed his book "The Helmet of Navarre" at teenage reader level, so even I could work out what was going on.
For a straight forward account of how the Bourbon Prince Henri, from the remote kingdom of Navarre, on the French border with Spain, became King Henri IV of France and how he brilliantly reigned over his country, while walking a tight rope between two warring religions, I highly recommend this book.

Navarre Bible : Acts of the Apostles
Highly recommended for all persons who are reading the Bible for the first time or who are well versed in it. The commentaries make the most difficult passages very understandable.

This could very well be the only study guide that one would need for self-study of certain portions of the Bible. Why not all? Not all of the Bible is available, but the most important books of the New Testament are.

Magnificent
This whole series is magnificent. I gave it to a monastery who said they had "never seen anything like it" and "it is never out of use". If I were stranded on a desert island and allowed only one set of books, this would be it.

A must have for the serious bible student. The commentary is a voice for traditional Christian faith. It is not just another commentary chained to the 19th century German school of thought. Quite Refreshing!

Wonderful Devotional Commentary
In this edition of St. Josemaria Escriva's project, much is given by way of critical commentary as well as devotional insight on the Gospel of St. Matthew. Sticking with the Church's ancient traditions regarding authorship, date, etc., the Navarre Bible provides a wonderful resource for living the spiritual life. A wonderful tool.

Accurate and Thorough Commentary/Explanation of the Bible
The first volume of the Navarre Bible that I owned is this volume covering the Gospel of St. John. I've used this many times in finding answers to questions about St. John's Gospel, both for myself and for others who know me. It includes the Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition) of the Bible along with the current official Latin translation. But the best part is the explanation and reflections upon the Bible text. I haven't found another Bible commentary that compares with this one in terms of accuracy, thoroughness, or usefulness.
