Conspiracy and the Spanish Civil War: The Brainwashing of Francisco Franco (Routledge/Canada Blanch Studies in Contemporary Spain)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (June, 2001)
Author: Herbert Rutledge Southworth
Average review score:

Superb study of anti-democratic, anti-communist politics
Herbert Southworth (1908-1999) was an outstanding historian of the Spanish Civil War. His many superb books include Le mythe de la croisade de Franco (1964), and Guernica! Guernica! A Study of Journalism, Diplomacy, Propaganda and History (1977). This new book is a triumphant affirmation of his career as a historian and opponent of fascism. Based on years of careful research, and written with lucidity, wit and humour, this book is both an excellent introduction to the vast literature on the war, and a significant contribution to that literature.

Southworth tells us exactly how Spanish fascists concocted the story of a 'communist plot' to try to justify their July 1936 military uprising against the democratically elected government. He shows how Spain's fascists accused their enemies of the anti-democratic conspiracy that they were brewing themselves - a technique that fascists have used from Berlin in 1933 to Indonesia in 1965. Fascist propagandists throughout Europe, particularly in Britain, publicised the story of the 'plot'. Too many subsequent historians have followed these propagandists and repeated their fascist fabrications. Southworth refutes in detail both the crude, open pro-Franco propagandists like Brian Crozier and the more sly anti-working class biases of Hugh Thomas.

The second part of the book deals with the writings that most influenced General Franco himself. It tells the story of Franco's associations with the Entente Internationale contre la Troisieme International, which consisted of a White Russian and a Swiss lawyer. This anti-democratic, anti-communist propaganda unit purveyed the usual dreary litany of diatribes against Jews and Freemasons; it naturally backed Hitler, Mussolini and Franco from first to last, and it passed on and embellished every lie and slander about trade unions, the labour movement, socialists and communists. Southworth proves that this tenth-rate dishonest tripe had a profound influence on General Franco.

Cooking of Spain and Portugal
Published in Library Binding by Time Life (June, 1969)
Author: Peter S. Feibleman
Average review score:

Don Starnes
This book is a compelling and fascinating description of the essence of Spain. Although the book dates from the 1960's, when Franco was in power, the most important insights of the book are still helpful. I haven't seen a better description.

Feibleman is the kind of fellow that you'd wish to have over for dinner just to listen to his experiences. An actor and writer, he seems to have been a vivacious traveler: he mixed with people, watching them cook and trying everything.

The book is a journey through Spain and Portugal, describing each region's people, landscape, agriculture, cooking, food and wine. Good pictures and recipes. Although the recipes themselves have been slightly adapted for the 1960's American kitchen's electric ovens and appliances, his narrative always details the authentic preparations and methods.

If you own this book, you will probably read every page (and stain many of them with olive oil).

Cosmos Latinos: An Anthology of Science Fiction from Latin America and Spain (Early Classics of Science Fiction)
Published in Paperback by Wesleyan Univ Pr (July, 2003)
Authors: Andrea L. Bell and Yolanda Molina-Gavilan
Average review score:

It's about time!
Just finished this fantastic book, and I mostly wondered why there has been so little work done in making such material available. This book really left me wanting more. These Latin American and Spanish writers of SF are able to treat many of the traditional SF themes in very original ways, without being derivative of American/European SF styles. The stories have a wonderful, unique flavor. I hope the authors continue to make such stories available in English, especially the more recent stuff. "Stuntmind" was one of my favorites.

CULTURA DEL BARROCO, LA
Published in Unknown Binding by Planeta Pub Corp ()
Author: José Antonio Maravall
Average review score:

15th century demons from hell
Like most dover press books, we have here a wonderful bargain: clear reproductions and good paper stock. Goya was a court painter trying to please his patrons, but in this series of etchings, he indulged his twisted soul in the first recorded anti war propaganda. These etchings are both lovely in their technique and horrifying in their imagery.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides: Spain (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Published in Hardcover by Penguin Books Ltd (03 October, 1996)
Average review score:

Sets a new bar for travel guides.
This is the best travel guide I have ever used for any country. The photos are spectacular and comprehensive beyond any expectation. Clearly tabbed by region and covering towns and villages covered sparsely if at all by other guides, this guide also allows the reader to learn basics of history, architecture, art, food, wine, and adventure with cross-references to the tutorials as you tour the country.

An adventurous independent traveler should not be without this book! Armchair travelers will also find this the next best thing to being there. Viva Eyewitness!

Don Isaac Abravanel: Statesman & Philosopher
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (May, 1999)
Author: Benjamin Netanyahu
Average review score:

Biography of a Jew whose Influence far exceeds his Fame
Don Isaac Abravenel lived at the juncture of the Medieval and the Renaissance, and through the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. His writings help preserve the Jews through this troubled time, but also delayed the resettlement of the Land of Israel.

Ben-Zion Netanyahu (father of the hero of Entebbe, and of the recent Israeli PM) first tells of the life of Abravenel, and then discusses his outlook and religion. This unusual treatment works very well. Netanyahu first introduces us to the attitudes and assumptions of the people who lived at the time, which are so often very different than our own, and then discusses how Abravenel fit into, or differed from, that zeitgeist. By building step by step -- World Outlook, View of History, Political Concepts, and finally Messianism, the author educates us about Abravenel's world, as well as his beliefs. I was surprised at Abravenel's prediction that the coming of the Messiah would be immediately preceded by a war between Christians and Moslems.

The endnotes, bibliography, and index are all very helpful.
