Fodor's 98 Spain (Fodor's Gold Guides)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Truly the King of GuidebooksThis is definitely the complete guidebook. It is well worth the expense just for the sections on the Canary Islands and Morocco. For a 98 version, it is still the best....

Fodor's Citypack Lisbon (Citypacks)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (08 May, 2001)
Average review score:

I had 24 hours in Lisbon and this was awesomeI had only 24 hours in Lisbon on my way to a conference. This book had the all-important map, a list of the top attractions with a page devoted to each- photo, directions, and briefly explaining why it's a draw. It explained the currency, the customs, and had a restaurant and lodging guide. I skimmed it on the plane and easily planned my trip from it- and the lady next to me, who had two much thicker guidebooks, saw that this was so much easier to use that she borrowed it from me and tossed her own to one side. And it was slim and fairly easy to carry. I've never had such a useful travel guide. It you were spending more than a week there you might need something more detailed- but I picked up the details from the places I visited! From the guide I just needed to know where to go and how, and this was perfect. And Lisbon, by the way, is wonderful ;-)

From Madrid to Purgatory : The Art and Craft of Dying in Sixteenth-Century Spain
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (August, 2002)
Average review score:

Excellent scholarshipEire does an excellent job of placing larger than life historical figures in context. Anyone interested in the Catholic Reformation in Spain should read this book. It will also be of great interest to those who are interested in mysticism, or the general zeal that Spain seemed to be frothing with during the Reformation/Counter Reformation era. The research is impeccable.
