Heretics or Daughters of Israel?: The Crypto-Jewish Women of Castile
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (April, 1999)
Average review score:

The Trauma of Converso WomenThis is an outstanding text. I have extensive experience working on Sephardic culture and the forced conversion of the Jews. In addition the author has been able to focus on one of the leading areas of Inquisitional studies that has gone unresearched for far too long and that is the treatment and experience of Jewish women forced to convert to Catholicism. This is a scholarly book that is a "must" have for anyone who is interested in medieval Spain, western history and nation-building because Spain was the first modern nation-state to come into existence in the West at the expense of minorities - the forced conversion and expulsion of Jews and Moriscos. The women of minority status were of the great risk and often the most abused. Levine Melammed has done a wonderful job in presenting this painful and traumatic experience. I recommend this text without any reservations.

Hidden Faces.
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (June, 1974)
Average review score:

Dali's novel of the pain and pleasure of obsessive love. This exploration of a doomed and destructive relationship owes much to both the Marquise de Sade and Baron von Masoch as Dali narrates the tale of his two main characters' descent into the darkest recesses of emotional dependancy and desire. Many of the elements that inspired Dali's art are here and so this book is a must for any fans of surrealism in general and Dali in particular.

A brief portuguese historyA.H. de Oliveira Marques is one of the brightest historians in Portugal, studyind both medieval and contemporary subjects. As for such he was able to create this masterpiece which combines in a very short narrative all of the most important facts and structures of the history of Portugal. This is the first volume of the work, covering a period since the romanisation to the fifteenth century. If you are looking to know more about portugal be sure to have for it was originally made for foreign students.

The History of Spain
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Interesting and easy to read historyIf you are an American, your touchstone of European history is always England. For much of the world, Spain is the "old country". This book made me see Spain in the way I see England. I now have a better feel for the land and its people. A good popular history.

The History of the Inquisition of Spain
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (December, 1988)
Average review score:

History of the Inquisition of SpainThis is the definitive work on the Spanish Inquisition. Any serious research on the subject should begin here. Lea writes in that wonderful late 19th century style, so the volumes are not only filled with valuable information they are not overly tedious to read.

A History of the Spanish Language Through Texts
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Essential for students of Spanish linguisticsAlthough this book has never appeared in the promised paperback edition and remains at a ridiculously high price, this does not detract in any way from the wonderful content. Pountain guides us easily and clearly through his chosen text extracts, concentrating on phonological, morphological and syntactic features. The book is methodically organised and is excellent for quick references. Particularly useful is the section on Keypoints at the end of the book which enables the student to sharpen their knowledge of the development and change of Spanish, including such features as lenition and the Old Castilian sibilant system.
As a student of Spanish linguistics I would recommend this book to anyone either studying the subject or with a genuine interest in Spanish from a descriptive and/or historical perspective.
